For starters, some bad news: There are more reasons to supplement now (1st part of this Supplementing 101 Series) than in any other century regardless of technological advances. America, particularly, is one of the most overfed and undernourished nation with the life-expectancy gap between the U.S. and other developed nations only getting larger, according to a new study from the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine. Actually, the U.S. ranks 40th (in the developed world) for life expectancy even though we spend far more per person on health care than any other country.
But, the good news is: We can change this by taking responsibility for our own health and providing our bodies with the missing key nutrients as a supplement to the primary focus of a nutrient-dense, organic and whole food eating lifestyle. No body (and nobody) is perfect and our bodies cannot produce some of the nutrients we need. With the food we are eating already lacking nutrients, supplementing can really be beneficial in staying healthy and building a stronger immune system to fight off our under-the-weather bugs.
Just as the science has been used in food for what we could blatantly call “bad,” there is and has been for just as long a “good” use of science in supplements. Starting back in 1915, when Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee created the first multivitamin before the word was even in the dictionary. I shall continue on to the 2nd part of this Supplementing 101 Series:

The Science behind Supplements
Before seriously taking a vitamin or supplement, please (Please!) test it. How? Leave it in water and see if, or how long it dissolves. Or put it in the oven and see how it cooks. If you see dark liquid/ooze, that is not natural.
Though if you want to save on time and money, do a little research. You can read all the benefits of different vitamins, minerals and supplements all day, but first start with the ingredient source, potency, quality, and absorption rate in humans. Then how those ingredients are compressed into the tablet and how that tablet breaks down and is dispersed within the body is fundamental.
Just finding companies that share this information will eliminate almost hundreds of business-driven companies from your list of options. But, finding one that has scientific studies AND patents to support this data will leave you with less than a handful of options. All this matters in the effectiveness of the supplement, which can be found listed by brand in ranking order here.
I personally stand behind the #2 Shaklee Vitalizer. As I have seen it make positive differences in those I love and care about within months, Vitalizer is a convenient strip of the most advanced multi-nutrient supplements in 6 tablets with 80 bio-optimized nutrients clinically proven to create a foundation for a longer, healthier life.
- Purity – most stringent screening process beyond USP standards; over 1,000 quality tests each time Vitalizer is made
- Potency – selection of best-studied nutrients in proprietary formulations
- Performance – S.M.A.R.T.TM delivery system supported by 12 patents & patents pending to ensure best absorption
- Proof – based on 12 Shaklee clinical trials and a first-of-its-kind Landmark Study
What is S.M.A.R.T.TM delivery system?
Stomach acids can deplete nutrients before they get where they need to in the body, so only Vitalea stays there where it can be optimized. However, the others don’t – Caroto-E-Omega in the upper intestine, B+C Complex in small intestine for 198% better absorption, Optiflora Probiotic in the lower intestine (w/ triple layer encapsulation to get there efficiently).
Still not feeling sure about Shaklee supplements? Stop back by for the next part of the series to see a few of the other millions of supporters whose lives have been changes after simply supplementing – of all walks of life from personable, next-door-neighbor moms to a well-established doctor to gym managers and owners.
